How to determine your body shape

Body Shape

I have to admit, until a few months ago, I had absolutely no idea what my exact body shape was. I imagine there is plenty of you in the same boat? Correct?

Since then, I have found it far easier to style myself by knowing what works best. So to begin, I thought I would share a few tips on how to calculate your body shape.

You will need:
  • A tape measure in inches (the textiles type, not the DIY type - that won't work so well)
  • A notepad - to jot down each measurement.

- To ensure accuracy throughout, wear underwear with a non padded bra or if this isn't possible, well fitted clothing will also guarantee precise measurements.

Step 1) Shoulder measurements When measuring the shoulders place the tape measure at the very tip of your shoulders to measure the whole circumference.

Step 2) Bust - Start from the back and bring round the tape measure so both ends meet in the middle to calculate your bust in inches. If things start to squish you've pulled too tight!

Step 3) Waist - To measure the smallest part of your torso (usually just above the belly button) start from the back and bring the tape measure around so both ends meet in the middle to calculate your waist in inches.

Step 4) Hips -  Wrap the tape measure around the fullest part of your hips and where it intercepts, that will be your hip measurement.

Easy right? Now it's time to work out which shape your measurements relate to. Don't fret if they don't add add up to one shape exactly, most people are a combination of two!

A Rectangle has hip and shoulder measurements in similar proportions with a little or undefined waist.

The Hourglass figure is naturally curvy and well proportioned, so the hips and bust will be of equal measurements and your waist will be at least 8-12 inches smaller.

With The Pear it’s all around the bottom and thighs, so this measurement will be the largest of the four. Your hips and thighs are wider than your shoulders and most typical pear shaped bodies have a small/ average bust and waist.

The Strawberry is broad on top; the waist and hips are narrower than the upper body, e.g. big boobs or broad shoulders. The top half measurements will be larger than the bottom section.

An Apple is a top-heavy body shape with a full bust and rounded tummy, the largest measurements will be the bust and stomach, with the smallest being the hips.

Let me know how you get on..
